Mix It Up!
How would you describe your style? Do you know your overall ‘style type?’ This is your preferred style aesthetic most of the time. (Leaving room for specialty pieces and trips like the occasional Vegas visit.) Style types can be anything from classic to romantic to edgy and fashion forward. My style type is kind of a hybrid of classic and edgy. I love wearing pieces that are classic with modern details but I also love mixing more classic basics with trendier, edgy pieces.
Knowing your style type can be a GAME-CHANGER and help you with both shopping and styling every day. Let me give you an example … have you ever admired a dress on a friend. Then you bought a version of that dress, but when you put it on, it didn’t look nearly as good on you?? The dress then hangs unworn in your closet and you think there’s something wrong with you. But, it’s probably NOT you, it’s more likely that the dress is not your style. Once you understand your style, you won’t waste time buying things, or trying to style pieces… that simply are not “you“

Mixing Feminine & Masculine Styles
So this is an example of my favorite style formula: mixing feminine and masculine pieces together. (With a dash of tulle to up the fashion fun factor) The gorgeous, tulle, midi skirt is clearly quite feminine. Perhaps the epitome of femininity when it comes to fashion conjuring ballerinas and Carrie from Sex & The City. (BTW, anyone watching the new series?) I love the length, the color and of course the drama of this skirt. I picked up this exact tulle skirt at Twinset an Italian boutique in Spain, but I linked some similar options! To bring on some edge, I’m paired the skirt with some masculine lug sole Chelsea boots. These are quite unexpected and definitely add a street element to the look. They also make the outfit more functional.
I wanted to go full on winter white so I finished the look with a half-tucked, ribbed, white sweater. You can wear it on or off one shoulder for a touch of sexy. Then, I kept all of the jewelry very minimal with a gold cuff, ring, and pearl hoop earrings.

If you’re wondering if you can wear a tulle skirt (or anything) over 40, I say…life is short, wear the tulle!
How To Mix Style Types Like a Pro!
- Stick to two style types – Remember to always keep things simple. Mixing two style types is much easier and more effortless than the whole trendy kitchen sink… ya know what I mean?
- Accessorize strategically – When you are trying something new and perhaps a bit more outside the box like this look above, keep your accessories simple. This will help avoid the ‘crazy lady on the street’ vibe. 😉 There are definitely some women who can pull off anything, but I’m guessing if you are reading this and you made it this far, you are not sure…so when in doubt simplicity is the way to go.
- Pair with basics – Pick you risky piece or two. In my case it’s the tulle skirt. Once I knew that this was my hero piece, I added basics to the rest of the look. It also allows your drama piece to really shine.
